Stitching the Path to Success: How Rishipal Turned Skills into a Sustainable Enterprise

In rural India, countless individuals possess the skills, determination, and ambition to improve their lives. Yet, many remain unable to move beyond subsistence livelihoods due to limited access to resources, infrastructure, and opportunities.

The story of Rishipal from Mansoorpur village in Bijnor district, Uttar Pradesh, is a powerful example of how targeted livelihood support can unlock hidden potential and create lasting change.

At 56 years of age, Rishipal had spent years working in a local bag-making shop. His work involved stitching bags and selling them in nearby markets. Despite having extensive experience and strong technical skills, his monthly income remained between ₹5,000 and ₹6,000. Like many skilled artisans in rural communities, he possessed the expertise to run a business but lacked the machinery, capital, and market access required to establish one

For years, he nurtured a dream of becoming self-employed. However, with limited earnings barely covering household expenses, investing in equipment was simply not an option. As he grew older, concerns about his family's financial security became increasingly important. He wanted more than a livelihood, he wanted independence, stability, and dignity.

That opportunity emerged through Mankind Pharma’s Prosper Holistic Rural Development Project.

During community mobilization activities in Mansoorpur, project staff and members of the Village Kind Committee identified Rishipal as an individual with strong entrepreneurial potential. Through interactions and household visits, they learned about his experience in bag manufacturing and his aspiration to start an enterprise of his own.

A detailed assessment revealed that while Rishipal had the skills and market understanding necessary to succeed, he lacked the tools needed to take the next step. To bridge this gap, the project supported him under its Local Enterprise Development initiative by providing an electric bag-stitching machine. In addition, he received guidance and support to strengthen market linkages and expand his customer base.

With access to the right equipment, Rishipal established his own bag-making enterprise and started generating higher income. For the first time, he was no longer dependent solely on wage-based work. His dream of running a business was becoming a reality.

However, entrepreneurship often comes with new challenges.

As his production increased, frequent power cuts and unreliable electricity supply in the village began affecting his operations. Production schedules were disrupted, and he often had to work late into the night whenever electricity became available. For a senior citizen managing a growing business, this was not only inefficient but also physically demanding.

Recognizing that unreliable energy could threaten the sustainability of the enterprise, the project responded with a second layer of support. Under the enterprise scaling-up component, Rishipal received a solar panel system, inverter, and battery setup.

With uninterrupted access to power, he was able to work efficiently during daytime hours, improve productivity, and reduce dependency on the village's erratic electricity supply. What could have become a barrier to growth instead became an opportunity to build a more resilient and sustainable enterprise.

Today, Rishipal produces approximately 20–22 bags and handbags every day and earns between ₹18,000 and ₹19,000 per month, more than three times his previous income.

The transformation extends beyond financial gains.

The enterprise has strengthened his confidence, increased his self-reliance, and improved his family's financial security. He is now recognized within the community as a successful entrepreneur who transformed his skills into a sustainable source of income.

His journey also offers an important lesson for development practitioners and livelihood programs. Asset distribution alone is rarely sufficient. Sustainable livelihood development requires a holistic approach, one that combines equipment, mentoring, market access, and continuous support to address emerging challenges.

In Rishipal's case, the bag-stitching machine helped launch the enterprise, but the solar energy solution ensured its sustainability. Together, these interventions created a pathway toward long-term economic independence.

As development organizations continue working to strengthen rural livelihoods, stories like Rishipal's demonstrate the power of investing in existing skills and aspirations. When capable individuals are provided with the right resources, opportunities, and support systems, they do not simply increase their income, they build resilient futures for themselves and their families.

Today, Rishipal's enterprise stands as more than a successful business. It is a testament to the transformative impact of community-driven development, entrepreneurship support, and sustainable energy solutions in rural India.

"I had the skills to make bags, but I never had the resources to start my own business. The support provided through the Prosper Holistic Rural Development Project changed my life. Today, I can work comfortably during the day, earn a better income, and support my family with confidence." — Rishipal, Mansoorpur Village, Bijnor
